The Virtual Reality (VR) world has evolved over the years. It started with VR helmets and cinema boxes, and now it has evolved into the gaming device that it is today.
The VR world has more potential than just for entertainment, but for now, gamers are enjoying the immersive experience as it is marketed. There are many types of VR sets out there. In this article, we will attempt to highlight the VR options that are out there. We will go into some pro’s and con’s as well so that you can choose the set that is right for you.
What Does Oculus Have?
Oculus is run by Facebook and is the first company to have its VR set on the market. As such, they have had time to evolve with the market changes. Right now, Oculus offers tethered and standalone devices. A tethered device simply means that you can plug the device into the computer.
A standalone device means that you do not have a cord. Rather, all of the hardware needed is loaded into the device, or it is Bluetooth. Right now, Oculus has Rift S. and Quest as market options.
What Are the Competitors Offering?
HTC has Vive Pro and Vive Cosmos on the scene at the moment. Vive Cosmos works with Steam. Vive Pro, on the other hand, is more geared towards developers. Another major player on the scene is Sony. Sony has the PS4-focussed Playstation VR.
Of course, no one can forget about Microsoft when it comes to tech. Microsoft threw its hat into the ring by offering a Windows Mixed Reality Platform. To use the platform, you will have to get a third-party set. Finally, there is Valve that offers the Valve Index Set.
What is the Price Range You are Looking At?
Gaming is expensive. When you wonder where the expression that you have to play to pay comes from, it seems likely that the gaming community would be a culprit.
Gaming with a VR headset that you actually own will be costly. For the Oculus Quest, you are looking at around $350. The Sony Playstation VR is around $270. If you’re looking for better quality, then the next two options might be more of your cup of tea—the Oculus Rift S. costs around $615.
Finally, the HTC Vive Cosmos costs around $700. You may have heard about the top of the barrel headsets that cost a couple of thousand dollars. These would be the Magic Leap One coming in around $2300. HoloLens 2 is around $3500.
As you can see, not many people have a couple of thousand extra dollars to spend on gaming. This is why we’ve decided to narrow out the last two choices as best of options.
Can You Find Sales on VR?
You certainly can wait for the sales to purchase VR headsets. You can actually find some VR headset for around $50 to $100. You will probably be looking at less well-known brands for these deals.
You should look for Zeiss or Homido V2 when you want to find more well-priced sets. You can look at TechBargains if you want to find a retailer that puts VR headsets on sale.
Oculus Rift S. and Oculus Quest
Whereas Oculus Quest is a standalone, the Rift. S is a tethered set. Rift S. has a lot more power as a result. The tethered sets tend to come no less expensive than $400.
While Quest doesn’t have the game range as Rift S., it still has quite a selection. They used to have the Oculus Go, but it was discontinued.Sony Playstation VR
To use this package, you will need a Sony Playstation and a Sony Playstation Camera as well as a headset. If you buy the Playstation VR bundle, then usually, all of these elements are included.
They use the Playstation Wands to move, but these controllers are not as comfortable as the ones for Oculus. This set will probably work with the new Playstation 5, but it is not confirmed yet.
HTC Vive Cosmos
This is an upgrade for the Vive headsets. It has a higher resolution. It also has outward-facing cameras. It’s comparable to the Oculus Rift S. However, it’s more expensive than the Rift S., so if you like these features, you’re better off with the Rift S.
If you want a further upgrade in terms of motion tracking, then you should go with the Oculus Vive Cosmos Elite. It works with VR software that you can get from Viveport. You can subscribe to Viveport Infinity for a subscription and have an unlimited VR experience.
Windows Mixed Reality
These headsets work with Windows 10. These headsets are called mixed reality. They offer augmented reality (AR) through cameras that are on the headset. These are easy to set up, but they may not offer all of the bells and whistles of the tethered VR devices.
There are not as many games through Windows for these mixed reality sets as there are for the other devices. However, if you are tech-savvy, then you will be able to utilize Steam to get some more games. The only headset right now that is available for this is the HP Reverb G2.
There were other ones that were being worked on through third parties, but the results never panned out. This doesn’t mean though that in the future, Windows Mixed Reality won’t be putting out other headsets.
VR headsets are complicated. They are all hooked up to different systems if they don’t have hardware built into them. You also have to through AR into the mix with the Windows release. All of the headsets are unique in their own right.
The tethered ones seem to provide the best motion features. You can go for a lower-priced set from a discount store if you don’t feel that you will use the set a lot. All in all, you have to look at the features and operating systems and figure out what works for you.
Keep in mind that you will need a subscription service to access unlimited gaming.
